SMS was the first company I worked for where I needed to carry a mobile phone. When the data wasn’t flowing at 2am I was one of the folks some of you used to call. I do remember the day I left the company and turning the mobile off for the first time in a very long time. In that spirit, this site’s becoming a little mobile aware. As of today, we’ve gone iPhone; kind of.
While we’re working on the site’s content, I am also playing with he software that’s running everything. Now, if you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch you can see an optimised version of this site using little browser button on your device. You can still leave comments too! So, now there really is no excuse not to get involved.
However you access the site, what shall we put here? Oh, and let me know what it looks like.

An original article from Broadcast Systems Engineering in February 1989 discusses the launch of Satellite Media Services, “Since the creation of independent local radio in 1973, stations have used a variety of methods to collect centrally produced advertisements and interviews”. You can read the whole article online here.

A Dish At SMS Lawford Heath
As we move to update the content here on ex-sms.com, we have added some new photographs to the Satellite Media Services group at Flickr. These pictures, which I think come from early 1997, show the building works at the Lawford Heath earth station which went into service around that time. There are some images showing the building of the new control centre and the installation of some of the new dishes. I’ll try and get some further information about the dishes – because I know that’s what people are interested in – as soon as I can.

SMS Control Centre, Euston, London
If you remember this building then this might be the site for you. This is ex-sms.com and is maintained by some ex-employees of the satellite audio distribution company that was based in Euston Tower, London.
If you have any photograhic memories of SMS please upload them to our Satellite Media Services group at Flickr.
